RRB maths: what is on the paper, and how to get fast enough for it

Mathematics is 30 questions in RRB NTPC CBT 1, 35 in CBT 2 and 25 in RRB Group D, with one-third-mark negative marking and no sectional timing. Railway maths is arithmetic-first and computation-heavy — number system, LCM and HCF, ratio, percentage, interest, time and work, speed and distance — with a smaller block of elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics.

The pattern, stage by stage

There is one clock for the whole paper in every RRB CBT, which makes maths the section that decides whether you finish. It is the slowest section per mark in the paper.

PaperSectionQuestionsMarksTime
RRB NTPC CBT 1Mathematics303090 min (whole paper)
RRB NTPC CBT 2Mathematics353590 min (whole paper)
RRB Group D CBTMathematics252590 min (whole paper)
RRB ALP CBT 1Mathematics202060 min (whole paper)

Question counts and timings follow the most recent official notifications. Exam boards do revise the pattern between cycles — confirm every figure against the current year's notification before you plan around it.

Which topics actually carry the marks

The syllabus reads long, but the marks concentrate in a short arithmetic list that repeats across every railway paper:

What to practise daily

  1. Ten minutes on the recall base. Tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 15, fraction–percentage pairs, reciprocals. Railway maths is arithmetic-dense, so this layer pays back immediately.
  2. Three timed drills. ComputePrep's daily drills cover percentages, ratio, interest, profit and loss, averages, time and work, speed–distance, boats and streams, mensuration and raw calculation speed — most of an RRB maths paper.
  3. Learn five shortcuts, not fifty. Multiplying near a base, squaring numbers ending in five, squaring near a base, same-tens with units adding to ten, and difference of squares.
  4. Give the small algebra/geometry/trigonometry block a separate slot. It is a handful of marks, learned from a formula sheet rather than from drilling.
  5. Pace against the whole-paper clock. With no sectional timing, the failure mode is spending forty minutes on maths and running out of time in general awareness.

What ComputePrep covers — and what it does not

ComputePrep drills the arithmetic and calculation-speed core of RRB maths — 23 timed drill types plus vedic shortcuts — which is most of a railway paper. It does not drill elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry or statistics, which appear in NTPC and ALP as a smaller block. Use ComputePrep for daily speed on the arithmetic that dominates, and previous-year RRB papers for the remainder.

The other section

The other half of the paper has its own daily. Deduce's RRB reasoning guide covers the reasoning section — same makers, same free-daily model — and Deduce's reasoning puzzle book is the printed companion to it.

Frequently asked questions

How many maths questions are in RRB NTPC?

30 questions carrying 30 marks in CBT 1, and 35 in CBT 2. RRB Group D has 25 and RRB ALP CBT 1 has 20.

What is the negative marking in RRB maths?

One-third of a mark for each wrong answer, the same as every other section in NTPC, Group D and ALP.

Is RRB maths easier than bank quant?

The individual questions are usually more straightforward and there is far less data interpretation. What makes it hard is the absence of sectional timing — nothing stops you spending half the paper here.

Which RRB maths topics repeat the most?

Percentage, ratio and average, time and work, time–speed–distance, profit and loss, and simple and compound interest. Number system, LCM and HCF also carry more weight than they do in bank papers.

How much of the 90 minutes should maths take?

Roughly 35 to 40 minutes for 30 questions is realistic. It is the slowest section per mark, which is exactly why calculation speed changes the outcome here more than anywhere else in the paper.
