SSC quant: what is on the paper, and how to get fast enough for it
Quantitative Aptitude is 25 questions and 50 marks in SSC CGL and CHSL Tier 1, inside a shared 60-minute paper with 0.50 negative marking. SSC quant is not bank quant with a different logo: roughly half of it is advanced maths — algebra, geometry, trigonometry and mensuration — and there is nothing like the DI-heavy weighting of a bank paper. Speed still decides the section, but the syllabus is wider.
The pattern, stage by stage
All four Tier 1 sections share one 60-minute clock, so quant competes directly with the three sections around it. In Tier 2 it becomes its own timed module.

Question counts and timings follow the most recent official notifications. Exam boards do revise the pattern between cycles — confirm every figure against the current year's notification before you plan around it.
Which topics actually carry the marks
The split that catches bank aspirants off guard is arithmetic versus advanced maths. Both halves are real, and the advanced half is where most marks are lost:
- Arithmetic. Percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, averages, time and work, time–speed–distance, boats and streams, mixtures and allegation. Roughly half the section.
- Algebra. Identities, linear and quadratic equations, surds and indices. Heavily formula-driven and almost absent from bank prelims.
- Geometry. Triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, similarity and congruence. The single most common weak spot for candidates who came from bank preparation.
- Trigonometry. Ratios, identities, heights and distances. Small, predictable, and entirely learnable from a formula sheet plus practice.
- Mensuration. 2D and 3D. A reliable scoring block once the formulas are automatic.
- Data interpretation. Present but light — usually one small set, not the two or three a bank paper gives you.
What to practise daily
- Ten minutes on the recall base. Tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 15, fraction–percentage pairs. SSC's advanced-maths questions still bottom out in arithmetic you have to do quickly.

- Give advanced maths its own slot. Algebra, geometry and trigonometry are learned from a book and a formula sheet, not from speed drills. Schedule them separately; they are close to half your marks.
- Review the method, not the answer. "Was there a faster route?" catches the right-but-slow questions that quietly cost you the section.
- Respect the negative marking. 0.50 in Tier 1 and 1.00 in Tier 2. A geometry question you are guessing on is a worse bet than a percentage question you are guessing on, because you can usually eliminate more options in the latter.

How is SSC quant different from bank quant?
Bank prelims is arithmetic, simplification and data interpretation under a tight sectional clock. SSC adds algebra, geometry and trigonometry — roughly half the section — and gives data interpretation far less weight.
Which SSC quant topics give the fastest marks?
Mensuration and trigonometry, once the formulas are automatic, followed by percentage-family arithmetic. Geometry gives the slowest marks and takes the longest to build.
Do vedic shortcuts help in SSC?
Yes, for the arithmetic half — the same five or six shortcuts that matter in bank exams. They do nothing for a geometry proof or a trigonometric identity, so treat them as a speed layer rather than a syllabus.
How much of the 60 minutes should quant take?
Usually 20 to 25 of the 60 minutes, because it is the slowest of the four sections per mark. Bank time in general awareness and reasoning so that quant is not the section you rush.
