Profit and loss questions hand you two of cost price, selling price and percentage, and ask for the third. The percentage is always taken on cost price unless the paper says otherwise, and that one rule settles most of them. In a bank prelims you have roughly forty-five seconds each, so the target is a single line of arithmetic rather than an equation you solve.
Profit, loss and discount are worth two to three marks in almost every banking and SSC prelims paper, and they are among the most reliably scoreable questions on it — the arithmetic is small and the patterns repeat. What costs candidates the marks is not difficulty but seconds: writing SP = CP × (100 + p)/100, rearranging it, then dividing. The drill below is timed precisely so you stop rearranging and start recognising.

Profit and loss percentages are on cost price. Discount percentages are on marked price. Getting this wrong is not an arithmetic slip — it produces a clean, plausible, wrong number that will be among the options.
A 25% profit means SP = 1.25 × CP, so CP = SP ÷ 1.25 = SP × 4/5. Working in fractions (25% = 1/4, 20% = 1/5, 12.5% = 1/8) removes the division entirely: ₹6000 at 50% profit is ₹6000 × 2/3 = ₹4000, done in your head.
20% then 10% off is not 30% off. It is 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72, so 28%. The single-figure equivalent of successive discounts a and b is a + b − ab/100, and 30% will always be sitting there as an option.
Profit means SP is above CP; loss means below. A one-second glance at whether your answer is on the right side of the given number kills most careless errors, and it is faster than re-deriving.

The wrong options are not random numbers. Each one is the result of a specific careless error for this topic, so picking one tells you which habit is costing you marks.
The commonest error in the whole topic. If an article sells for ₹6000 at 50% profit, the cost is not ₹3000 — it is ₹4000, because the 50% is 50% of the cost, not of the sale. ₹3000 is always among the options.
Two discounts of 20% and 10% give 28%, not 30%. The gap is small enough to look like rounding and large enough to be a different option.
Half of these questions ask for cost price and half for selling price or profit percent. Under a clock it is easy to compute correctly and then tap the number you computed on the way, which is also on the list.

Successive discounts multiply, they never add. Two cuts of 20% and 10% leave 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72 of the marked price, so the single equivalent discount is 28%, not 30%. On a marked price of ₹2,000 you pay ₹1,440, not ₹1,400. The formula is a + b − ab/100, and 30 will be printed as an option.
Because the 25% sits on the cost price, not the selling price. Cost price = 500 ÷ 1.25 = ₹400. Taking 25% of ₹500 and subtracting gives ₹375, which is a clean, plausible, wrong number. Both ₹375 and ₹400 will be among the options.
