Source: https://computeprep.com/rrb --- Railway maths guide # RRB maths: what is on the paper, and how to get fast enough for it **Mathematics is 30 questions in RRB NTPC CBT 1, 35 in CBT 2 and 25 in RRB Group D,** with one-third-mark negative marking and no sectional timing. Railway maths is arithmetic-first and computation-heavy — number system, LCM and HCF, ratio, percentage, interest, time and work, speed and distance — with a smaller block of elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. ## The pattern, stage by stage There is one clock for the whole paper in every RRB CBT, which makes maths the section that decides whether you finish. Exam boards do revise the pattern between cycles — confirm every figure against the current year's notification before you plan around it. ## Which topics actually carry the marks The syllabus reads long, but the marks concentrate in a short arithmetic list that repeats across every railway paper: - **Number system, LCM and HCF, decimals and fractions.** The base layer, and unusually prominent in RRB compared with bank exams. - **Percentage, ratio and proportion, averages.** The workhorse trio. Fast marks once the fraction–percentage pairs are automatic. - **Profit and loss, simple and compound interest.** Predictable formula-driven questions that appear in every cycle. - **Time and work, time–speed–distance.** Including pipes and cisterns, trains and boats. Consistently the largest arithmetic block after percentages. - **Mensuration.** 2D and 3D. Reliable marks with a memorised formula set. - **Elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry.** A smaller block than SSC's, but present in NTPC and ALP. - **Elementary statistics.** Mean, median, mode and simple graph reading. Usually a couple of questions. ## What to practise daily - **Ten minutes on the recall base.** Tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 15, fraction–percentage pairs, reciprocals. RRB Group D has 25 and RRB ALP CBT 1 has 20. ### What is the negative marking in RRB maths? One-third of a mark for each wrong answer, the same as every other section in NTPC, Group D and ALP. ### Is RRB maths easier than bank quant? The individual questions are usually more straightforward and there is far less data interpretation. What makes it hard is the absence of sectional timing — nothing stops you spending half the paper here. ### Which RRB maths topics repeat the most? Percentage, ratio and average, time and work, time–speed–distance, profit and loss, and simple and compound interest. Number system, LCM and HCF also carry more weight than they do in bank papers. ### How much of the 90 minutes should maths take? Roughly 35 to 40 minutes for 30 questions is realistic.
