# IBPS quant: what is on the paper, and how to get fast enough for it

**Quantitative Aptitude is 35 questions and 35 marks in IBPS PO prelims, and Numerical Ability is another 35 in IBPS Clerk** — both inside a 20-minute sectional window, about 34 seconds a question. Very few aspirants lose that section on theory. They lose it on seconds. Simplification, series, quadratic comparison and data interpretation make up most of the paper, and all four are calculation-speed problems.

## The pattern, stage by stage

Quant changes character between the stages: prelims is a raw arithmetic sprint, while mains replaces most of it with Data Analysis and Interpretation — bigger sets, heavier numbers, and caselets you have to read before you can calculate.

Question counts and timings follow the most recent official notifications. Exam boards do revise the pattern between cycles — confirm every figure against the current year's notification before you plan around it.

## Which topics actually carry the marks

A typical IBPS prelims quant paper is far more predictable than the syllabus makes it look. Roughly, by share of the 35 questions:

- **Simplification and approximation.** Often 10–15 questions. Pure speed — no concept to learn, only a recall base and shortcuts.
- **Data interpretation.** Usually 10 questions across two sets (table, bar, line, pie or caselet). The maths is easy; the arithmetic volume is not.
- **Number series.** About 5 questions — missing-number or wrong-number. Pattern recognition first, arithmetic second.
- **Quadratic equation comparison.** About 5 questions in the x-vs-y format. Fast marks once factorising is automatic.
- **Arithmetic word problems.** The remainder: percentages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, averages, ratio, time and work, speed–distance, boats and streams, mixtures, and a stray permutation or probability question.

## What to practise daily

- **Ten minutes on the recall base.** Tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 15, and the fraction–percentage pairs. If you are recomputing 17 × 18 during a paper, no shortcut will save you.

- **Review the method, not the answer.** After each question ask "was there a faster route?" rather than "was I right?". Right-but-slow is the actual problem and it is invisible unless you look for it.
- **Practise approximation deliberately.** In a five-option MCQ you rarely need the exact value — you need enough precision to eliminate four options. This one habit is worth minutes across a paper.
- **One topic at a time.** Per-topic timing tells you where you are slow. "Time and work costs me 70 seconds" is fixable; "quant is hard" is not.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many quant questions are there in IBPS PO prelims?

35 questions carrying 35 marks, with a 20-minute sectional time limit. IBPS Clerk prelims has 35 Numerical Ability questions in the same window.

### Which quant topic carries the most marks in IBPS prelims?

Simplification and approximation, usually 10 to 15 questions, followed by data interpretation at around 10. Between them they are close to two-thirds of the section, and both are decided by calculation speed rather than concept.

### How fast do I need to be for the 20-minute sectional?

About 34 seconds per question if you attempt all 35 — which almost nobody does. A realistic target is 25 to 28 solid attempts, which still means roughly 45 seconds each including reading.

### Do I need vedic maths for IBPS?

You need five or six shortcuts, not fifty sutras. Nikhilam for multiplying near a base, squaring numbers ending in five, squaring near a base, the same-tens/units-add-to-ten case, and difference of squares cover most of what a prelims paper throws at you.

### Is IBPS Clerk quant easier than IBPS PO quant?

The topics overlap almost entirely. Clerk numerical ability leans harder on simplification and straightforward arithmetic and lighter on complex DI, but the sectional clock is identical, so the speed requirement is not lower.
